June 2025 Newsletter: New Cloud Hosting Service, Recent Work & Upcoming Events

News

Albert Bierstadt Storm Clouds c.1880

June was a busy month, with exhibitions here and interstate, so the publishing schedule of my newsletter has blown out even further than usual. Poor form, I know, but obviously these things have to take a back seat to, you know, doing the actual work.

Following on from moving hosts and rebuilding my website, I’ve made some changes to my IT infrastructure which will hopefully benefit my artwork photography clients. If you’d had artwork photographed by me in the past you’ll know that all my digital negatives are archived and backed up so you need only shoot me an email if you ever lose your files or require them in a diffrerent format. In the past, I have supplied clients with their files via DropBox, but because of the expense and space restrictions which come with that service, I would periodically have to delete files from the server to make room for new ones. Occasionally clients would get back to me a few months later because they could no longer access their files. This was no problem for me, as it’s easy enough for my to upload them again, but obviously it would be better if there was a permanent cloud storage solution so my clients’ work could be stored securely off-site and easily accessible at all times.

To this end, I am now using Proton Drive as a cloud-hosting service for all my clients moving forward. Proton is end-to-end encrypted and has more than enough space for me to maintain a permanent archive. Clients do not need an account to access their files – as with DropBox, I will send a link via which their files can be accessed at any time.

For now I am simply doing this for current clients, adding to it on a job by job basis, because the archive is too large for me to upload in one hit without chewing up all my bandwidth for the next month. However, if you’d had works photographed by me in the past and would like to have your files added just let me know.

Of course, I will continue to maintain an onsite archive and backups of the negatives, so if you ever require edits to your files or need new ones output in a different format I am always happy to provide them at no cost.

Recent Work

I’ve been printing Matt Harvey’s artwork for his band We Lost The Sea for over 10 years now, so it was a great pleasure and honour to print and frame works for what I believe was his first solo exhibition at The Old Bar in Melbourne a few weeks ago.

The works are printed on Canson Rag Photographique 310gsm paper, which has a wide colour gamut and produces strong blacks for a matte paper, making it perfect for reproducing Matt’s highly graphic digital illustrations. The ebonized finish preserves the character of real timber and compliments the slightly distressed quality of the works themselves.

Upcoming Events

Hamish Fleming recently completed 30 portraits in 30 days, a Herculean undertaken which he documented on his Instagram. I was honoured to be asked to sit for him, particularly as I’ve never had my portrait painted before (despite being married to an artist for nearly 25 years – make of that what you will), and I was overjoyed with the result. Hamish will be exhibiting the works at The Basement Gallery & Studio, 12-14 Kingston Street Adelaide, on Friday July 11 at 6.30pm.

Erin Renfrey’s latest solo exhibition, Once Upon A Lemon Drop, featuring a new selection of her slightly whimsical, slightly sinister watercolour paintings opens at The Mill opens on July 18 at 5.30pm and runs until September 5. Erin’s work is quite unique and always a joy to frame and I can’t wait to see these up on the wall.
