Custom Framing

Unique conservation-grade custom frames made from solid timber and finished custom stain mixes, available in any colour or tone you desire.

The Role Of The Picture Frame

Picture framing fulfills a number of important functions: it is the most convenient method to display a piece of art on a wall, and as such it forms a point of harmony between the artwork and the surrounding décor; it may enhance the aesthetics of the artwork by the careful use of colour and form; and, lastly, it performs a vital role in the protection and long-term preservation of the art.

As such, original works of art, limited edition prints, or memorabilia of any value, be it financial or sentimental, should be displayed by a high-quality picture frame which both looks beautiful and will protect the value of the art. This is the art of conservation framing.

My Custom Framing Services

Whether you are a collector, an artist or simply have an eye for quality, my beautiful and unique frames will ensure your art is tastefully displayed and protected for a lifetime. I have over a decade of experience in the picture framing industry and in that time I have framed original artworks made using a variety of different materials, often with their own unique challenges, from delicate paper-cut collages, to heavy mosaics, textile works and mixed-media pieces.

I am fully conversant in the latest conservation framing techniques and contemporary presentation styles, including float-mounting and shadow-box frames. Although superior-quality custom framing requires high-quality materials, it needn’t cost a fortune so long as a few basic principles are adhered to and I can tailor my services to help find a solution to suit almost any budget.

I firmly believe that, when it comes to picture framing, the simplest approach is often the best. Although I can come up with bold and adventurous looks when appropriate, I tend to take a more conservative approach to most jobs, preferring to allow the art to speak for itself with minimal competition from the framing. If the client is unsure of how they would like their artwork framed, I often ask about the décor of the room in which it is to be hung, and whether they have any other frames on the wall already so we can tailor a look which suits not only the art itself but also the environment in which it is to be displayed.

About My Frames

My standard frames are made from Tasmanian Oak, a sustainably-grown Australian hardwood, and are available in a variety of off-the-shelf and exclusive custom profiles which can be coloured or toned to suit your own unique aesthetic. My custom stain mixes can colour-match to suit the artwork itself or to match the décor in which it to be hung, from rich wood tones to wild and saturated colours. Alternatively, frames may be painted in any colour of your choice; we can either pick a tone found in the artwork, or you can bring me a colour card from your preferred paint manufacturer. Gilding and high-gloss finishes using either wax or shellac are also available.

All paper works are held in place with water-release adhesive tabs. I DO NOT use glue or double-sided tape when mounting artwork and everything I do is both fully reversible and done with the long-term preservation of the artwork in mind. Textile works and sports memorabilia are stitched and, for more complicated or unusual pieces, I will find non-invasive installation technique. Adhesives will only be used as a last resort and only ever after clear consultation with the client.

All mats and backing boards are acid-free and all my frames are fitted with 99% UV-resistant, conservation grade glass which will protect the work from fading for a lifetime. Non-reflective glass and acrylic are also available.

For something special I can also produce unique hand-crafted custom mouldings in contemporary or traditional styles using reclaimed or exotic timbers, including classical mouldings and modern live-edge frames.

In addition to prints and photographs, I frame textile pieces, sports memorabilia and other unusual or difficult pieces.

I can also repair or retrofit vintage picture frames with replacement mats or glass to house new works or simply bring an old frame up to the latest conservation standards.
